PTA SIM Verification: System & Rules [2026]

Every guide reduces pta sim verification to a text message. It is bigger than that: verification is the identity system behind every SIM in Pakistan, from your CNIC record and fingerprints at NADRA, through a live biometric match, into PTA’s registry. This guide explains what verified means and what puts a SIM at risk.

Quick answer: pta sim verification

  • Meaning: your identity is matched to NADRA by fingerprint.
  • Since: BVS mandatory for new SIMs since 1 August 2014.
  • Check yours: 668 or cnic.sims.pk, counts only.
  • At risk if: your CNIC expires, a fraud report lands, or the SIM sits unused for 180 days (separate activity rule).

What PTA SIM Verification Actually Means

Verification is the proof event behind a SIM’s record. At issuance or transfer, the holder’s live fingerprint is matched online against NADRA through the Biometric Verification System (BVS) before the activation is written into PTA’s SIM Information System. A SIM is verified when that match stands behind its record.

ConceptWhat it means
VerificationThe proof event: a live fingerprint matched against NADRA (BVS).
RegistrationThe record itself: a SIM held in the SIM Information System under one CNIC.
OwnershipWhose CNIC the record sits under; that person carries legal responsibility for the SIM.
DIRBSDevice registration by IMEI; a separate system. The DIRBS CNIC lookup taught online does not exist.

How the System Works, End to End

It starts at a franchise, service centre or authorised retailer. Hand over your original CNIC; the agent takes your live thumb impression and the BVS device checks it online against NADRA. Only after the match succeeds is the SIM activated and the record written into the registry.

The registry enforces the cap as it writes: one CNIC can hold 8 SIMs for personal use, 5 voice + 3 data, per PTA’s FAQ under the Supreme Court order of 5 November 2015. Your window in: the 668 SMS service and the free cnic.sims.pk portal, both returning counts, never names or numbers.

The Timeline: 789, BVS and the 2015 Drive

Pre-activated SIMs were abolished on 1 February 2009: SIMs sold non-activated; the buyer called 789 and a call centre verified them against NADRA online. In October 2009 PTA launched the SIM Information System 668.

Biometrics followed: BVS phase 1 in Karachi and Balochistan (31 December 2013), then nationwide for all new SIMs from 1 August 2014. The pre-BVS base then faced the 2015 re-verification drive, run under the National Action Plan after the APS attack. PTA’s closing statement: 103 million active SIMs targeted, 75.5 million re-verified, 27.5 million blocked by 15 May 2015. Blocked SIMs returned only through a biometric match.

Staying Verified: What Puts a SIM at Risk

Verified is a standing, not a lifetime stamp (now automated under SRO 1519(I)/2026). An expired CNIC is the biggest risk: 8.1 million SIMs sit on some 4.5 million expired CNICs (PTA, April 2026); renew at NADRA and re-verify. On the holder’s death, ownership must transfer within 60 days or the SIMs block. Cancelled or impounded CNICs block within 5 days; fraudulent issuance, immediately.

Keep two axes separate: verification is about identity, the 180-day activity rule about use. Under the January 2026 retention facility, a prepaid SIM needs one activity (call, SMS, data or recharge) every 180 days or the number is reissued: a verified SIM can still die of silence. The limit was never cut to 6: still 8 SIMs.

Check Your Verification Status

PTA’s own instruction (31 December 2025 release): verify the SIMs on your CNIC at cnic.sims.pk or by sending your CNIC number, without dashes, via SMS to 668 (charges may apply). The portal is free; both routes prove one thing: the per-operator count on your CNIC.

Neither shows anything about another person: no names, numbers or counts, and no public reverse lookup exists. For one number, the definitive check is a franchise visit: original CNIC, live biometric. PTA publishes no verification fee; a counter demanding one is not quoting PTA.

FAQs

What is PTA SIM verification?

The biometric proof behind every registration: a live fingerprint matched against NADRA through BVS at issuance or transfer.

How can I confirm my SIM is verified?

Send your CNIC to 668 or check the portal for the counts. For one number, a franchise biometric check is definitive.

What is the SMS code for SIM verification?

668. Send your CNIC number, without dashes. It is an SMS service, not a USSD code; no PTA source documents *668#.

Is checking my SIM verification status free?

The portal is free; 668 carries charges (about Rs 2 + tax). PTA publishes no separate verification fee.

Does DIRBS verify my SIM?

No. DIRBS registers devices by IMEI; SIM verification runs through BVS and the SIM Information System. A DIRBS owner lookup does not exist.

Why did my SIM stop working even though it was verified?

Separate axes: a cleanup block (expired, cancelled or deceased-holder CNIC, fraud) or 180 days of silence.

How many SIMs can I have on my CNIC?

8 for personal use: 5 voice and 3 data, per PTA’s FAQ. The cut-to-6 claim has no PTA source.

What happens to SIMs on a deceased person’s CNIC?

NADRA notifies operators and the SIMs get SMS alerts; the family has 60 days to transfer ownership biometrically. 903,230 were deactivated in January to July 2026.

Can I check someone else’s SIM registration?

No: the checks show only your own CNIC’s counts; leaked owner data is an offence under PECA Section 16.

Meri SIM verified hai ya nahi, kaise pata karun?

Apna CNIC (bina dashes ke) 668 par SMS karein ya cnic.sims.pk dekhein: count mil jayega. Pakki tasdeeq ke liye franchise par biometric karwayein.

Conclusion

Verification makes a SIM mean one person: a NADRA identity, proven by fingerprint, written into PTA’s registry. Keep your CNIC current, keep the SIM active, and audit your counts with 668 and the portal. A SIM on your CNIC that is not yours? The disown guide covers removing it.
